OUR PASTOR

Rev. Dr. Henry K. G. James

Reverend Dr. Henry Kunwun Gbassagee James became pastor of Memorial United Methodist Church in Taunton and Trinity United Methodist Church in Providence, Rhode Island on July 1, 2011.  Immediately prior to coming to Memorial and Trinity, Dr. James was the pastor of Georgia United Methodist Church in St. Albans, Vermont.  A native of Liberia and the son of a paramount chief, Dr. James graduated from the University of Liberia with a degree in criminal justice and sociology and served with the Special Security Service as a bodyguard for the President of Liberia.  In 1972, he received a call to ministry and served with a Pentecostal ministry and the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Liberia.

In the mid 1980s, Dr. James came to the United States to study in seminaries in Ohio.  He eventually moved from the AME to the United Methodist Church.  He received a Master of Divinity degre in the African American style of preaching from Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio and a Doctor of Ministry degree in church revitalization and growth from United Theological Seminary in Dayton.  He assumed pastorates in Ohio and West Virginia, in Stoughton, Massachusetts, in upstate New York, and in St. Albans.

Dr. James has applied his skills in congregational growth and development in both urban and rural environments and presents a very charismatic and interactive form of preaching.  He resides in Somerset with his wife, Ruth, and  twins Henry and Henriet.  He also has adult twins, also a son and daughter, who reside in Liberia and whom he hopes to bring to the United States.
